Recently, today.msnbc.com published their list of the 8 craziest beauty treatments of the decade.  While their list certainly includes some treatments that give us pause, some of these aren’t only not crazy, some are even FDA approved.

1 – ‘Different’ facials: Facials come in all shapes, sizes and colors and may use many different materials. There are oatmeal facials, clay facials, and now – fecal facials. Some of the more extreme facial treatments to come out recently include substances many people wouldn’t want to touch, much less put on their faces, including snail secretion, human placenta, and spermine – a substance found in human sperm.

2 – Snake Massage: In Tel Aviv, Israel, you can pay $70 to have six non-venomous snakes placed on your body and enjoy what the spa calls a relaxing massage via serpent. We wonder what Indiana Jones would say.

3 – Fishy Pedicure: Customers have been paying big bucks to feed the fish. Using tiny fish imported from Asia, customers can dip their feet in the fish tank and relax while the fish feed off the dead skin, resulting in smoother feet. 14 states have banned this procedure, deeming it unsanitary as the fish are reused on multiple customers.

4 – Delicious Scents: If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, why not entice him with a food-inspired aroma? From flame broiled meat scented cologne to cheesy flavored lip balm, our choices in scent have grown, for better or worse.

5 – Bootylicious: Buttock Implants have grown in popularity over the past decade thanks in large part to the growth in celebrity backsides. Famously curvaceous women like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez have inspired many women to seek out a more plumped behind and some are turning to cosmetic surgery to get it.

6 – Designer Vaginas: Vaginal rejuvenation procedures have definitely seen a rise in popularity in the past few years. Some plastic surgeons are even including this in a group of procedures referred to as the mommy makeover which often includes tummy tuck, breast lift, and liposuction as well. For many, the procedure is about getting back the pre-baby look and sensation, and is much more than vanity run amok.

7 – Bottled Baths: If water just isn’t doing it for you, how about some sake? In south-central Japan, there’s a medspa where you can bathe in your choice of different spirits including red wine or green tea. While it does sound a little different at first glance, people have bathed with salts and flower petals without so much as the bat of an eyelash. It it really so strange to think of red wine as a bath companion?

8 – Botox: One common misconception about Botox is that it is unsafe or that it’s vanity gone mad as people inject themselves with toxins. Botox has actually been around for years treating people for cervical dystonia, a painful condition which involves spasms of the neck muscles. Botox was used to relax the muscles. It is known to be highly dependable and predictable when dosed and injected properly. It is being used off label to treat migraines and TMJ. We don’t find that crazy at all.

As with any surgical procedure, there are side effects and risks which may include bruising or swelling at the site. Another side effect is the dimple could be there all the time. However, as the surgery heals, the dimple “falls out” and will only be seen when you smile. Recovery is about a month and results are potentially reversible.

Dermatologists have discovered yet another gender inequity…

(HealthDay News)   Women develop more and deeper wrinkles around their mouths as they age than men do.  The disadvantage had long been suspected, but a new study provides “irrefutable scientific evidence,” said Dr. Foad Nahai, a plastic surgeon practicing in Atlanta and editor-in-chief of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal .

The authors of the paper believe they even know why women suffer more in this department.

“The gender differences were most probably due to the amount of appendages [hair follicles, sebaceous glands] and the connections between the skin and muscle of the lips,” explained senior study author Dr. Moshe Kon, head of the department of plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery at University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.

“We had always had the impression that male skin doesn’t age as rapidly as female skin,” said Nahai. “What we didn’t know, and this study points out, is that one of the reasons that lines are deeper in women is because they have fewer sweat or sebaceous glands, the glands that make the oil that keeps our skin feeling soft … So women are producing less oil, which is protective and keeps the skin smoother.”

Previous studies had not focused in on differences between men and women in the perioral area of the face, meaning the region around the mouth.

Women tend to go for procedures to remedy such wrinkles more often than men, although it hadn’t been clear if women were just worried about how they looked or if their wrinkles were actually worse.

The authors studied the skin around the upper lip in both male and female cadavers, as well as reconstructions of those areas.

Several key differences between men and women emerged: women had fewer sweat glands around the mouth than men; women had fewer blood vessels so less blood flow to that region; the muscles around the mouth are closer to the skin than in men, which may pull the skin in tighter, causing wrinkles; and, although the number of hair follicles were about the same in both genders, men had more sweat glands per hair follicle, again contributing to more relaxed skin throughout aging.

Hormones also seem to play a role in women’s dermatologic aging process.  ”A lot of gender differences in health and disease are related to estrogens,” said Dr. Seth Thaller, chief of plastic surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

For instance, estrogens promote healing, meaning that women tend to heal from wounds faster. And postmenopausal women have reduced blood flow, again contributing to lines and furrows. And they experience a decrease in the fat secreted by sweat glands.  Meanwhile, women on hormone replacement therapy have been reported to have fewer wrinkles than those not taking the hormones.  Tissue also gets thinner as people age.  Many existing cosmetic procedures, including fat transfers, can remedy some of these changes, Cheung added.

However, Dypsort has actually been available in Europe for therapeutic indications since 1991 and for cosmetic applications since 2001. In April 2009, Dysport (officially known as BoNT-A/D) was approved in the United States for the “temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines.” These are the lines between your eyebrows. However, just like Botox Cosmetic, Dysport can be used “off-lable” for treatment of crow’s feet (squinting lines around your eyes), forehead wrinkles, chemical brow lifts, platysmal bands (neck bands) and sweaty palms and armpits.

The molecule in Dysport is exactly like Botox Cosmetic but is covered by a different coating, which dissociates (dissolves) at a different rate. That is why the onset of action of Dysport is thought to be faster than Botox Cosmetic since the coating comes off faster. In Botox Cosmetic Treatment the usual onset of action is 3 to 7 days where the Dysport onset of action seems to be a few days faster. The dosing is different with Dysport, so there may be some confusion when translating Botox “units” with Dysport “units.” This is why you need to see an injector who has experience specifically in Dysport injections. Also, there is a learning curve with Dysport injections, so you may not initially achieve the same results as you are used to receiving with Botox Cosmetic.

There is also some confusion about the pricing of Dysport with many reports on the Internet and advertising claiming that it is cheaper than Botox Cosmetic. There is a discrepancy in the potency of units. A “unit” of Botox is not equivalent to a “unit” of Dysport, so unit pricing is not comparable. There is a slight savings with Dysport, but it is about 5% – nothing substantial. So, do not expect to go to your plastic surgeon to achieve the same results as Botox Cosmetic for half the price. However, with competition, hopefully prices will come down. Allergan (Botox Cosmetic) is currently offering a $50 mail-in rebate for Botox Cosmetic customers and Medicis Aesthetics (Dysport) is offering a $75 mail-in rebate. With these rebates and introductory pricing, you may be able to get a better deal than your last injection.

In the end, it is great to have another minimally invasive product approved on the market which can give consistent and noticeable results with virtually no downtime and minimal risks.

People are risking death or serious injury by using an illegal Botox equivalent without prescription, a CBD cosmetic doctor warns.

Dr Mario Soteriou, of Cosmetic Image Clinics, said self-administering the goods obtained at a new US-based online store was equivalent to playing “Russian roulette”.

He said neither the Botox equivalent nor the dermal filler sold on the website was approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, which also decrees the products must only be administered under medical prescription.

The website also sells needles and an instructional DVD to enable buyers to self-administer the do-it-yourself Botox equivalent, with the promise of wrinkle free skin.

The dermal filler is also being marketed with a DIY guide for plump lips.

Dr Soteriou, who has specialised in cosmetic medicine since 2000, said he was “severely shocked” by the shonky website.

He said injectable treatments such as Botox and dermal filler should only be administered by qualified practitioners.

“The big problem with these drugs is that we don’t know what they are made of and they can’t guarantee you safety or results,” Dr Soteriou said. “Self-administering them is essentially like making a life decision without putting any thought into it.

“I wouldn’t even advocate for doctors and nurses to be injecting themselves.

“You are also risking your own death if you have an adverse or severe allergic reaction to the drugs.”

Dr Soteriou believes the website is a “money grab” and fuels people’s desperate desires for quick-fix anti-ageing products.

“I’ve never heard of these products before and I attend a lot of medical conferences to ensure I’m up-to-date with the latest in facial rejuvenation techniques,” he said.

Via an almost unbeliveable story on Wired: Fake Botox or not, Discount Medspa is going to jail!

A website that sells a prescription drug similar to Botox without requiring a prescription claims it has more than 2,000 customers. Some have learned how to inject the botulism-derived drug into their own faces from YouTube videos produced for the site.
 

Discountmedspa sells a variety of other DIY cosmetic treatments, including prescription Renova, and lip-filling gels. The botulinum toxin-derivative for sale on the site is Dysport, produced by the pharmaceutical company Ipsen and is a competitor of Allergan’s Botox. The site simply calls it “the Freeze.”

A Grand Prairie, Texas, woman, Laurie D’Alleva, who appears to be the site’s proprietor, performs treatments on herself in self-made videos posted to the site’s YouTube channel. In one video, D’Alleva pulls out a vial of what is presumably Dysport and a syringe filled with saline.

“It’s important to remember that you are mixing the potency of the botox,” she says, mixing the contents of the vial with the saline solution. She then injects her forehead and the areas around her eyes.

Ipsen received FDA clearance to sell Dysport in the United States a few months ago, but it’s a prescription medication. It’s the first direct competitor for the branded Botox, which is the most popular cosmetic treatment in America. Doctors did more than 2.4 million Botox procedures in 2008, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In recent years, the vast amounts of money spent on the treatment have attracted scams and knockoffs, which the FDA has had to crack down on. In May, the FDA also ruled the drug needed a tougher “black-box” warning label to reflect an increased understanding of the small, but real risks of the treatment.

In the U.S., it is illegal for anyone but a doctor or nurse practitioner to prescribe drugs to patients and only pharmacists can dispense drugs to people. Yet drug sellers on the internet routinely flout the FDA’s regulations. A review published last month in the Annals of Family Medicine found more than 130 websites offering antibiotics without a prescription. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy tracks thousands of sites that don’t meet its standards for brick-and-mortar shops. LegitScript, a private firm that works with the NABP, has database of 47,633 internet pharmacies; 46,570 of them aren’t up to snuff.

These sites are brazenly circumventing regulations that protect consumers from bad or fake drugs and ensure that the chemicals are used correctly. The laws were designed precisely to prevent Americans with little to no medical training from doing things like buying a form of toxin, mixing it with saline and injecting it into their faces. Yet, precisely that appears to be possible with the help of discountmedspa.com.

In a blog post response to a customer’s skeptical query, Laurie provided the following explanation for the legality of her site and the provenance of her products.

I know there is much information out on the net about fillers and Botox ‘knock-offs’. This is not what I am selling! The products I have are from a company names Ipsen… I have a connection that allows me to get products that are not usually available in the states because I purchase other products in their line. Now the trick is I have to market it and label it under my own brand, to keep them and myself from getting into any legal trouble. It does take a leap of faith, but I assure you I have over 2000 customers now who love the products and are saving literally hundreds of thousands of dollars between us!

“I watched a Doctor on YouTube.com do this to a patient and he warned people not to inject below the eyes however I had to put a smile on my face too,” Lesley commented on a blog post. “The trick to this is to hold a pencil just at the corner of one side of your mouth and inject two units of Freeze at the very bottom of your chin. This will cause your [sic] very end of your mouth to turn up. Then do the other side the same way. If you don’t get it even you may have a crooked smile so be very careful that the injection is placed in exactly the same place as the other side.”

Her recommendation for another user is to “watch YouTube.com and you will learn a lot of some of the Doctors [sic] secrets to recreating your face the way you want to look.”

Other women describe mishaps with over-injecting the drug.

“My Dr. would never inject the crows feet. I did and got GREAT results!” wrote a commenter named Pat. “Unfortunately, I can’t read those little hash marks on the syringe too well and over injected above the brow on one side. A week later I’m now sporting a half closed and swollen eye, and look ready for Halloween!”

the Texas Department of State Health Services released the following statement, but would not comment further.

“The Texas Department of State Health Services is aware of discountmedspa.com through a complaint we received. That complaint status remains open and under review,” the agency wrote.

The complaint was made under the Texas Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which regulates the sale of prescription drugs like Dysport in the state.

“Botox is a prescription drug that must be dispensed or sold by a licensee pharmacy and only with a prescription from a licensed practitioner. Any over-the-counter sale of Botox is illegal,” the agency affirmed.

Unbelieveable that people could be so dumb as to inject themselves with Botox… or anything else for that matter. Discount Medspa’s owner is definately headed for the slammer.

In the hunt to discover the next blockbuster medical use for Botox, doctors have injected it experimentally into muscles and glands all over the body, making it medicine’s answer to duct tape. According to recent medical journals, physicians have used it to treat chewing problems, swallowing problems, pelvic muscle spasms, drooling, hair loss, anal fissures and pain from missing limbs.

“We see it as a molecule that keeps on giving. As we understand it more, it gives us new ideas of how to use it,” says Dr. Mitchell F. Brin, a neurologist who is the chief scientific officer for Botox at Allergan, the drug’s maker.

No other therapeutic agent “has so many demonstrated uses,” he says.

But some health advocates worry that doctors are widely adopting novel uses for Botox before federal guidance and rigorous clinical studies have established safe and effective dosages for the new treatments.

“It’s trial and error with a nerve poison,” says Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, the director of the health research group at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group. Last year, the group petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to require a warning label for injectable toxins.

In the first instance, Xin “Faith” He of Natural Beauty in Bellvue, WA told clients she was injecting Botox and the hyaluronic acid dermal filler Restylane when in fact she was injecting counterfeit substances. Her actions led to at least two reported negative reactions since 2004 that required a dermatologist’s or plastic surgeon’s care. One victim (pictured above), who wished to remain anonymous, remarked, “My face looked like Frankenstein’s.”

In the second case, the two owners of Crystal Nails in Burien are charged with offering an official an $800 bribe to overlook a dangerous and unapproved radiation-emitting laser treatment they had imported.

Of course, neither of these Botox injectors were running a real medical spa, skin clinic or laser treatment center. They were just injecting Botox on their own.

A pointed nose and taut skin seem to have emerged as the two most important assets for Indians going by the number of people opting for rhinoplasty or “nose jobs” and botox injections in the country.

Though there are no official records of plastic surgeries in India, a study of hospital records show that cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty and liposuction have seen an increase of 150 per cent in the last five years.

Other popular surgical procedures include abdominoplasty and male breast reduction.

Among the non-surgical procedures, some of the widely practised procedures include Botox injection, microdermabrasion (a non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of micro crystals to remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal younger, healthier-looking skin), collagen injection, laser hair removal and chemical peel.

Vanity is constant as the norther star… So is Botox.

From Medical Spa MD: Medical Spa RX has had it's first physician who has reordered Botox 5 times. In fact, there are a number of them. Woot!

Oddly enough, I consider 5 reoders of Botox significantly significanly more impressive than only 4. (I don't know why. Perhaps because Medical Spa RX has only been offering Botox for the last 4 months so 5 orders would be more than monthly.)

Although this chapter from the Advanced Medical Aesthetics Training Manual wasn’t actually requested in the training manual I wrote for the academy students, I felt it was extremely important for , especially for medical estheticians, to know the difference amongst the various treatments used to alleviate the appearance of wrinkles and folds, and the difference between dynamic and static lines.

Medical estheticians have the most “face time” with clients, examining it with magnifying lenses, treating it with exfolliants, moisturizers, galvanic current, high frequency, various acids, etc. They understand the realm of fine lines and wrinkles and know what can be alleviated with topical treatments such as facials, peels, microdermabrasion and laser resurfacing, and what cannot.

I cannot tell you how many patients call or come into our office with no knowledge of the difference between paralyzing agents such as Botox and Dysport, and dermal fillers. We take it for granted that we know the difference, but injectable products can be very confusing to the lay person. Because the aesthetician works with the client’s skin, they should be well versed in the differences in the two categories of injectables and the products that lie within. Estheticians become your most powerful education source for your clients which ultimately leads to an upsell for them (with possible commission).

Many people think all fillers products are the same, nor do they care to understand the difference between hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapetite. All they truly care about is “how long will it last” and will the “results look fake”. Only with proper education can the medical esthetician effectively and intelligently discuss the differences in the filler products, educate the patient about the effects and lasting results, and help lead the patient to the right product, or combination of products, for their expected outcome.

This information in this chapter is very important for your front desk/phone people as well!

Of course, if you read the story you'll see that some nurses were observerd 'reusing needles' that contaminated vials of Botox. That practice at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada, public health officials have repeatedly said, contributed to the hepatitis C outbreak in the Las Vegas Valley.

One business that seems to be going well in Las Vegas is known for throwing Botox parties. That's an ongoing phenomenon across the country where friends get together and drink champagne while their wrinkles are needled away.

"We just couldn't handle it financially," said one medical assistant who asked to remain anonymous. "We would have gone out of business."

Medical assistants at two different spas said their owners only stopped multipatient use of single-use vials of Botox "until things quieted down" after the hepatitis outbreak was announced.

The Review-Journal had little trouble finding medical providers who said they and their companies knowingly broke state and federal regulations.

"You can't have doctors worrying about breaking the law or guidelines or whatever," Niamtu said.

A new company called Dysport is manufacturing a similar product, and the competition could force Allergan to provide smaller dosage vials to physicians who want them, he said.

Now a federal lawsuit filed in California by Las Vegas physician Ivan Goldsmith argues that sales representatives for Allergan Inc., maker of the popular anti-wrinkle drug Botox, promote multipatient use of its 50-unit or 100-unit single-use vials.

Goldsmith's lawsuit alleges that doctors can only make a profit using Botox if they reuse the single-use vials that the drug comes in.

Now a federal lawsuit filed in California by Las Vegas physician Ivan Goldsmith argues that sales representatives for Allergan Inc., maker of the popular anti-wrinkle drug Botox, promote multipatient use of its 50-unit or 100-unit single-use vials.

Goldsmith’s lawsuit alleges that doctors can only make a profit using Botox if they reuse the single-use vials that the drug comes in.

But the complaint also raises issues that go beyond dollars and cents, ones that the community has been acutely aware of since the hepatitis C outbreak became public in February of last year.

The Botox business model “created an unacceptable and unreasonable risk of serious and debilitating injuries and illnesses, including HIV and Hepatitis B and C,” states the lawsuit, filed Sept. 29 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Allergan spokeswoman Kellie Reagan said the product’s (Botox) prescribing label has always been clear: single use only.

She wouldn’t comment, however, on how Allergan’s sales representatives promote the drug’s use.

Goldsmith said in the lawsuit that Allergan misrepresented to him “the true and permissible use of the product.”

Most patients need far less Botox than is provided by Allergan in either its 50-unit or 100-unit vials, the lawsuit said.

And, according to the suit, the medication can’t be saved for later use on the same patient because, once a vial is opened, it must be thrown away within four hours of first use.

Physicians and medical spa providers of Botox contacted by the Review-Journal said Allergan’s sales representatives have consistently said vials of Botox could be used for multiple patients.

“No matter what training seminar or continuing medical education course I went to, the Allergan people always said a vial was for multiuse,” said Sandra Bledsoe, who operates Focus Medical Weight Loss & Spa. “Many patients only need 15 or 20 units at a time.”

“Allergan seminars have demonstrated multiple patient use of the product for years,” said Las Vegas plastic surgeon Dr. Julio Garcia, who said he has attended the company’s seminars.

Garcia said doctors felt they could be safe if they used a new syringe and needle for each injection, which, even if against the rules, would result in sterile treatments.

The problem comes when mistakes happen, said Dr. Joseph Niamtu, a Richmond, Va.-based cosmetic facial surgeon long active with the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons and the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation.

“Someone inadvertently picks up a contaminated syringe and inoculates the entire vial,” he said.

That may sound familiar.

Last year, health officials revealed that authorities investigating a cluster of hepatitis C cases had observed nurses at the Endoscopy Center’s Shadow Lane clinic reusing syringes in a manner that contaminated single-use vials of medication.

Nine hepatitis cases were linked to the practice, and more than 50,000 people were urged to get tested for blood-borne diseases.

Medical officials say no cases of hepatitis C have been connected to Botox injections.

Still, Dr. Ihsan Azzam, state epidemiologist for the Nevada State Health Division, said concerns about blood-borne diseases in relation to the administration of Botox can’t be dismissed.

He said discussions with some of the state’s medical providers have made it clear to him that multipatient use of single-use Botox vials continues in Nevada.

The Review-Journal also contacted providers who say the practice is ongoing.

“I think we need to include use of Botox as a risk factor when we talk about hepatitis,” Azzam said.

He noted that after he sent a bulletin to physicians and other medical providers about injection safety in the wake of the hepatitis C crisis in Las Vegas, some providers who administered Botox in their practices were not supportive.

In his directive, which echoes the position of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he wrote: “Do not administer medications from single-dose vials to multiple patients or combine leftover contents for later use.”

He said a number of providers called him to say that they wouldn’t follow the regulations because they knew how to safely administer Botox to multiple patients from a single-dose vial.

“I was very surprised,” Azzam said Thursday, adding he hopes state inspectors will catch those who refuse to abide by medical regulations. “Some seemed to be daring me to come after them.”

If caught, physicians’ licenses would be at risk.

Azzam said Botox providers told him it would not be possible to make a profit if the injection practices he supported were followed.

“I followed the rules,” Goldsmith said last week. “And it killed me financially.”

Goldsmith is asking the court that his lawsuit be certified as a class action, arguing that more than 100 doctors who invested in the product are affected nationwide, with their economic losses exceeding more than $5 million.

In his lawsuit, Goldsmith said a 100-unit vial of Botox could cost him $1,000, but a patient treatment might only be $500. Because it is a single-use drug, the rest would then have to be thrown away.

“You were losing money that way, not making it,” Goldsmith said. “The patient didn’t want to eat the cost.”

Goldsmith has had a run-in with the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners, which last year subpoenaed some of his patient records.

The board said it had received information that Goldsmith illegally dispensed compounded medications, dispensed medications without having a pharmacist on site, allowed clerks to dispense medications, and used human growth hormone on patients without meeting Food and Drug Administration criteria.

Goldsmith has denied the allegations and, more than a year after the board’s subpoena, no action has been taken.

Garcia said he is following the rules regarding Botox injections, but knows that many in the medical community aren’t doing so.

Last year he wrote a letter to the state medical board saying patient safety could be compromised because spa personnel continue to inject Botox “with the doctor not present.”

That issue has been in the news lately, the result of recent attempts by the medical board to keep medical assistants from injecting Botox. That effort failed.

“The possibilities of infection, given what is going on when it comes to injecting Botox by whomever, are terrifying,” Garcia said.

“We’re not talking about 40,000 or 50,000 people. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of injections” in Southern Nevada.

Tracy Jones, a Las Vegas saleswoman, said while she has been a frequent user of Botox, she generally doesn’t know if she is the only one receiving Botox from a vial.

“It’s not something people ask,” she said.

Most medical providers are well aware that Botox, like any injectable medication, can be contaminated when drawn up into a syringe.

To prevent contamination in his Botox injections, Niamtu, the Virginia facial surgeon, said he and his staff every day will draw up five sterile 20-unit syringes of Botox from a 100-unit vial.

Though he said that may not be in accordance with CDC guidelines that say single-use vials cannot be used for more than one patient, Niamtu said he must walk a tightrope between the “practical and the optimal.”

He said “something will have to be done,” if medical officials in other states become as aggressive in enforcing regulations as he believes they are in Nevada.

“Doctors can’t throw away that much medication, and patients aren’t going to pay for the extra,” Niamtu said. “Allergan will have to step up to the plate and make different quantities of the drug. It may cost them a little more.”

Laser Hair Removal Clinic Procedures

Generally, most IPL treatments technically operate the same way when performing a hair removal procedure. The parameters on the cosmetic laser or IPL (joules, milliseconds, pulse, etc.) should be set according to the skin analysis and history performed on the patient.

It is important to instruct clients not to wear dark clothing near the area to be treated as the pigment in the clothing could potentially be absorbed by the Intense Pulsed Light Device (IPL) or cosmetic laser light and can result in a burn. The patient should be instructed to refrain from using any body washes, lotions, cosmetics, or any skin medications the day of the treatment.

Some patients may prefer to have a topical anesthetic applied prior to the procedure. If any residue of the anesthetic remains, it should be wiped clean from the skin. Often a cooling gel or other cooling apparatus is applied to the skin.

A spot test should be performed on the intended treatment area. (Small white sheets of paper with perforated holes are often available for spot testing patients.) In the spot test procedure, the test paper is placed over the area to be treated and one firing of the laser or IPL device is applied over the hole in the paper. After waiting 10 to 15 minutes, the area is checked for unusual redness swelling, bruising, or any other undesirable responses. If the area emits a slight reddish hue with no other abnormalities, the device settings are optimal.

Some cosmetic lasers or IPLs require a second pass over the treatment area with different settings.

Hair Removal Clinic: Post Treatment

After a aesthetic laser or IPL hair removal treatment he patient may experience a mild burning sensation and redness following the hair removal procedure. This is can be expected and can be relieved by applying ice packs and an oral anti-inflammatory or pain medication if warranted by the physician. Exposure to ultraviolet light (sun, tanning beds/booths) should be avoided. A sunscreen with an SPF 20 UVA and UVB protection should be applied to the skin prior to leaving the office.

In the case of burning or blistering a topical antibiotic medication should be applied and the skin clinics physician should be consulted.

Unfortunately, some patients may experience temporary pigment changes such as lightening or darkening of the skin.

Laser hair removal clinic patient education: The patient should be made aware that an actively growing hair is the only follicle which will respond to IPL treatments. In the weeks following the procedure, the portion of the hair which remains under the skin (after shaving prior to the procedure) will be be expelled. The patient will begin to see these hairs protrude from the follicles which may be misinterpreted as hair regrowth. This is especially more noticeable in areas of the body which has thicker or more coarse hair such as the armpits and genitals.

Laser hair removal patients should also be informed that no laser or IPL device can destroy all of the hair follicles… especially after only one procedure. Some hairs are in their dormant state and can’t be treated, some have been placed into a prolonged dormant state due to the procedure effects, and others have been transformed into vellus hairs (light, fine hairs). Several treatments are required at monthly intervals for an optimal outcome. A maintenance procedure performed at yearly intervals is recommended for permanent hair removal.

Botox &  Dysport are now offered at almost any skin clinic, laser clinic, laser treatment center . How come?

Botox is available from nearly all skin clinics and medical spas. 1. Planning to become pregnant, already pregnant or breast feeding

3. Antibiotics (Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Clindamycin, Lincomycin)
4. Medications for hearth rhythm problems

Dysport(Reloxin)

Dysport is a paralyzing agent approved by the FDA that’s similar to Botox in that it’s effects and treatment are the same. It’s a botulinum neurotoxin A complex(abobotulinumtoxinA) and is approved for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines in adults younger than 65 years of age.

Reloxin was the previous name of the product until the manufacturers decided on the name of “Dysport” upon FDA approval. Although Botox Cosmetic and Dysport function in the same manner and have the same contraindications and results, it should be known that the dosing units of the two agents differ and; therefore, cannot be combined.
